Note on GPS receivers for geocaching:
We
will be having an orientation on geocaching, the exciting new outdoor
sport which combines outdoor adventure with high technology. Each
team will need a portable GPS receiver. While we have three
planned, any more available would be useful.
Since there is a
wide variety of receivers, and operating techniques, we will not be
able to go over the operation and use of each model. It is
therefore important that you be familiar with the use of your own
before the event.
Please be sure that you know how to do the following:
Create
a new waypoint by manually entering latitude and longitude coordinates.
We will be using the WGS84 datum and coordinates in decimal
degrees. (dd.ddddd)
Designate a destination waypoint and
set the "go to" function. This will present a variety of
information screens to help find a destination.
Change the
display to show the map, arrow, compass or whatever display will best
help find the target. Also viewing the actual position
information in latitude and longitude is very helpful.
There should be time before the event to review your receiver and I will be happy to try to answer questions when I can.
This
can be a very fun and educational activity for everyone. We
especially expect the kids to enjoy this modern "treasure hunt".
