Picnic and Planning meetingMonday, January 16, 2012 (Martin Luther King Day)10:00 am. Big Shoals State Park, White Springs.
We
regret the short notice, but there is a recent surge of interest
and it is time to get the Explorers active again. Let's get
together, enjoy the outdoors, and decide what we want to do this year.
Big
Shoals State Park is an excellent meeting place. It is nearby and
has a multitude of activities for everyone. There is the 3.4 mile
Woodpecker bicycling trail through the woods, fishing, nature trails,
hiking trails, views of the Suwannee River including the largest white
water rapids in Florida (when the water level is right). There
are picnicking facilities and a (somewhat marginal) kayak/canoe
launching facility. We can even paddle down to the portage at
the rapids for better viewing. The portage also connects to the
Florida Trail and has a riverside campsite for hikers/paddlers.
Well behaved pets are also welcomed. There is a
$4 per vehicle entrance fee. Be sure to use the North entrance
via Old Godwin Bridge Road/SE 94th Street so we all end up at the same
end of the park.
Bring your family, a picnic, and bikes/scooters, boats, hiking shoes, cameras, etc. Be sure to review the calendar for suggested activities to be discussed.
Please let us know if you plan to come just so we know how many to expect. 719-6902 or email.
